A simple secret to making money online is providing value for foreign audiences.
The limit of how much you can make is the:
- demand for the solutions you're providing
- and the buying power of the people who need your solution.
For example, if you own a website where you talk about how to navigate from one location to another in Nigeria, your audience is automatically restricted to people in Nigeria (either natives or foreigners).
In advertisements, there is something called RPM - Revenue per Thousand Impressions, this is the value of every 1000 eyeballs that see an advert (banner, video, text, etc). And this RPM varies from one industry to the other based on how much the advertisers are willing to pay.
The higher the RPM the more money you make for your website views.
I once had a website with about 20k views monthly and I was making just about $1 monthly, I created a different one with about 7k views I was already making $100, in fact, some websites make more with the same traffic.
This is common knowledge to anyone making money online, the most lucrative audience is in the United States.
You might not be a niche site person like me, but this applies to every method of making money online.
For instance, YouTube.
YouTube channels that have viewers from the US make far more oney than the ones with viewers only from Nigeria. And it's understandable because the monetization method is advertisement, so the more money advertizers have and are willing to pay, the more the publishers make.
What about remote jobs?
The same thing applies. Some skills are of more global relevance than others. AI is of global relevance, so knowing how to work with AI in your area of expertise will open more international opportunities for you.
In fact, there are some skills that are not of local relevance but can fetch you money internationally. For instance, this Nigerian guy makes a funny video of himself singing Happy Birthday - most Nigerians won't pay for this. I'd never pay for it, but people in the US and other countries are.
I made a list of this kind of gigs on Fiverr that have foreign demand but don't require so much skill, I mean anyone can do them.
You can view it here.
Just for clarity, even people in the US are trying to sell to the US market. Asides the fact that they have a high buying power, they also have a large population.
Have I also practiced what I am preaching?
Yes, I had and I am still doing the same, let me give you some examples.
- I had a website for calculators useful to dog owners. Many Nigerians or Africans don't really care about dogs, so I didn't get traffic from Africa, most came from US. I was able to sell the websites for a lucrative amount
- I had a website around gardening, which sold in less than one year after making a few calculators on it
- I had a site around women health with some prevailing questions women from US ask. By the way, keywords research tools like Ahrefs help you find out what people are searching on Google in a specifc country. This site was my highest sale.
- I had a listicle site, with some hundred of lists an African would never care about
I could go on and on, now apart from my regular YouTube channel, I have a YouTube channel about countdown timers, countup timers with a 80% US traffic. This channel is even growing faster than my personal channel which has just 109 subscribers :)
By the way, you can change help me change that number if you click this subscribe button below.
Thank you!
On my way peronsal YouTube channel, I am beginning to adapt my content to be relevant to users from outside Nigeria.
In 2025, I am launching more YouTube channels.
So what is your action plan? How are you taking advantage of this in 2025?
I'll like to hear from you.
Meanwhile, I am open to your questions as usual.
